Larchmont Arts Festival: Art, Music For Adults & Kids - Sept 20
by Caren Osten Gerszberg
(September 11, 2008) This year’s Larchmont Arts Festival
on Saturday, September 20 will feature “A Show of Hands: The Children
of Larchmont” , two local bands, food from Auray Gourmet, complimentary
ice cream from Longford and – oh, yes – artists.
An array of professionals, emerging artists and first-time
exhibitors will be in Constitution Park (next to Larchmont Village Hall)
from 2:00 until 5: 00 pm. (Rain date is Sunday, September 21, same time.)
The artists include painters, sculptors, photographers and crafts people
from around Westchester and beyond. The festival, now in its sixth year,
not only gathers local talent but also provides opportunities to buy unique
works at direct-from-the-artist prices.
Kevin
McDevitt, a full-time photographer based in Stamford, Connecticut, is
the featured artist of the 2008 festival. An image of his compelling black
and white photograph—taken on the boardwalk at Rye Playland—can
already be spotted around town, adorning the arts festival poster announcing
the event. When Mr. McDevitt is not shooting for commercial clients such
as Verizon and Citicorp, he uses his creative talents to photograph landscapes
and portraits that hint at a fascinating story.
Joining Mr. McDevitt will be an array of professionals,
emerging artists and first-time exhibitors. They include painters, sculptors,
photographers and crafts people from around Westchester and beyond. The
festival offers a chance to observe the diversity of local talent and
to purchase unique work at direct-from-the-artist prices.
This year, in an effort to entice and entertain the community’s
youngest artists, a collaborative art project is being designed and implemented
by Sue Girardi, a Larchmont artist, and Laurie Rubin Spangle, an art dealer
and co-organizer of the festival. Titled “A Show of Hands: The Children
of Larchmont,” the project will involve children cutting out and
decorating their hand print, which will then be attached to the branches
of a “tree” (made of foam core).
Music is taking a new twist this year, with performances
by two bands, each made up entirely of high school students from Mamaroneck
and nearby towns. From 2:00 until 3:30, festival goers will hear a fusion
of funk and rock from CHEF—members include Jeff Dobronyi, Adam Katz,
Robbie Roth, Matt Weston and Ben Zuckert. Then comes jazz - from 3:30
until 5:00 - by Pagoda, with band members Andrew Katzenstein, Danny Garfield,
Pierre Piscitelli and Sam Weinberg.
