Mental Health Association Honoring Mamk's Yvonne Tropp
MHA on the Move: Run, Walk & Dance is September 20
from the Mental Health Association of Westchester
(September 4, 2008) The Mental Health Association of Westchester
is hosting MHA on the Move: Run, Walk and Dance, a one-day, two-part fundraiser
on September 20. The action begins begins from 8 am to noon at FDR State
Park in Yorktown Heights with a morning of running, walking and eating.
It picks up in the evening with a gala dance celebration that honors long-time
Mamaroneck resident and MHA Board member Yvonne D. Tropp.
The event seeks to raise awareness of mental health illness
and to break down barriers that prevent people from seeking the help and
treatment they need. (See: MHA
on the Move for details.)
Ms.
Tropp will be honored for her dedication to her community, to MHA, and
to MHA's Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program. Since 2001,
when Ms Tropp retired from a career in finance, she has been volunteering
as a child advocate, finding it a challenging and meaningful way to spend
her time. (See: Mamaroneck
Retiree Advocates for Foster Children.)
“Yvonne is a terrific advocate for the agency and
the program in addition to being an amazing advocate for families,”
said Jackie Boissonnault, director of MHA’s Children’s Advocacy,
who oversees the CASA program. For Ms. Tropp and the children she advocates
for, CASA work equals a world of difference. “I feel like I am improving
a child’s life,” said Ms. Tropp. “I can help that child
be safe and have a chance at a normal life.” (See below for information
on how to be trained and volunteer for CASA.)
In addition to her work with CASA, Ms. Tropp has also served
on the boards and chaired various committees of the Westchester Philharmonic
and the Beach Point Club. She graduated from Brown University with a degree
in Economics, received her MBA from New York University’s Stern
School of Business Administration, and is a Certified Financial Advisor
(CFA).
Ms. Tropp served on the board of the National Council of Jewish Women’s
Westchester Chapter, during which time she and three other council members
pioneered a canteen for retarded young adults in Mamaroneck. She and her
late husband, Alan Tropp, were also deeply involved in the New York/Westchester
Children’s Players, producing children’s theater for underprivileged
children throughout the City of New York, and serving on the organization’s
Board. The mother of four adult daughters, Ms. Tropp has been a member
of the MHA board since September of 2002.
