Mam'k Native in FringeNYC's "The Redheaded Man"
by Judy Silberstein
(September 4, 2008) David Jenkins, Mamaroneck High School
2003, may be remembered by local theater patrons as Albert in the 1997
production of "Bye-Bye Birdie" and for his various roles in
Mamaroneck's Semi-Royal Shakespeare Company at the Emelin and PACE productions
at the high school.
Mr. Jenkins took his love of acting to Tufts University, where he double
majored in Chinese and drama and performed in shows such as "Monster",
"Midsummer Night's Dream", "The Seagull" and "Pillowman".
Now the young actor is appearing in "The Red Headed Man" at
the Barrow Street Theatre in New York. Originally chosen as one of 201
productions for the 12th Fringe Festival that features new actors and
playwrights, the play is now one of twelve selected for extended performances
through September 13. Mr. Jenkins plays Brian, an architect inspired and
afflicted by a terrible childhood which haunts and taunts him in the guise
of a red-headed apparition.
Spotted in the audience at the opening of “The Red
Headed Man” were a number of MHS grads, including Brian Lee, Victor
Cohen and Alex Berger, who said they were "blown away" by David's
performance and by the play. David's role has been called "appealing"
by The Village Voice; he’s supported by a cast putting on a “gutsy”
performance. A preview trailer and ticket information is available at
www.theredheadedman.com.
What’s up next for the Mamaroneck native? Mr. Jenkins
has been cast to play the lead role in an adaptation of a screenplay by
Dylan Thomas. There will be three performances in October. Local audiences
will be informed as details become available.
