Rains Fail to Dampen Mam'k Historic Street Fair
by Burt Rozner

(June 30, 2008) Despite the forecast of thunderstorms and
scattered showers, local authorities estimated that 25,000 people attended
this year’s Mamaroneck Historic Harbor Street Fair on Sunday, June
22. Many sought cover from a brief mid-afternoon shower, but that didn't
dampen the spirit as people remained to enjoy the event.

A military color guard and the Pathfinder Drum Corps marched down Mamaroneck
Avenue, preceding the opening ceremonies. Jennifer Graziano, the fair's
chairwoman, officially opened the event after Mamaroneck Village Mayor
Kathy Savolt introduced local officials and dignitaries.

As in the past, a wide assortment of merchandise was displayed
and sold by vendors who had booths along Mamaroneck Avenue. Representatives
from community-focused groups were on hand to provide information relevant
to their organization.

Among a variety of culinary choices offered by local restaurants
were Indian, Italian, Moroccan, Japanese and Spanish.

Bands and musicians, some new this year, performed along
Mamaroneck Avenue and at Harbor Island. Due to the popularity of the mime
at last year’s fair, a second mime was added.
As with prior street fairs, tall ships were in the harbor,
one of which provided a pirate show on Harbor Island Beach.

The Eco-Village, started last year, featured speakers and
provided demonstrations on environmental and energy topics, and vendors
offered recyclable products for purchase.
