Struck By Car Still Unconscious.
(June 6, 2008) A nine-year-old boy was hit by a car at
around 7:45 am on Friday, June 6 near the corner of Magnolia and Grove
Avenue in Larchmont Manor. The driver of the 1995 Lexus sedan, an 18-year-old
male from the same neighborhood, was charged with driving under the influence
of alcohol.
According to Larchmont Police Lt. Walter Burke, the boy
is “doing better than they originally thought.” Neighbors
reported the Chatsworth Avenue School third grader had quickly regained
consciousness after being struck but they later learned he had suffered
several broken bones. He was taken first to Sound Shore Medical Center
in New Rochelle and later transferred to Westchester Medical Center in
Valhalla.
The young boy had accompanied his older sister who was
catching a Bee Line commuter bus a few blocks from their home on Prospect
Avenue. Lt. Burke said the boy was struck by the Lexus after he stepped
out into traffic in front of the stopped bus.
An initial interview with the driver led police to conduct
field tests for alcohol, which included use of an “alcho-sensor”
that measures alcohol on the breath. Based on those results, the driver
was charged with DWI, a misdemeanor. He was released on $500 bail and
ordered to appear for arraignment in Larchmont on June 17. Police also
obtained a court order for a blood test, which was conducted around noon;
results will not be known for a few days.
Police said they are not releasing the name of the driver
because of his age. Lt. Burke said he was unaware of any prior infractions.
