photos by Judy Silberstein and Joan Macfarlane
(June 5, 2008) Larchmont's Constitution Park was jammed
with families on Sunday, June 1 at the Kidsfest held to celebrate the
upcoming renovation of the Larchmont Library Children's Room. (See: New
Plan Adds Drama, Light & Space At Children's Library.) Filling the
park were authors and books, music and books, drawings and books, bookmarks
and books - and most of all children and books.
While their parents scrutinized architectural sketches of
the the new room, the children kept busy creating bookmarks, rummaging
through the books for sale, singing along with Armelle or the musicians
from the Groove and helping author/illustrator Alexander Stadler compose
an impromptu story about a girl who lived in a donut. Adults and children
also lined up for the free ice cream from Longford's.
The purpose of Kidsfest was to raise awareness of
plans for the library - but the event also managed to raise part
of the $250K still needed to pay for the $2.7 million renovation.
According to the Library's director, Diane Courtney, the event
grossed $3,859.

Community leaders were at the Kidsfest in support of the
library and to meet and greet the voters. Among them was State Senator
Suzi Oppenheimer (below left), who is running for re-election, and Larchmont
Mayor Liz Feld (below right), who is challenging her for the Senate. (See:
