SEPTA Awards Grants For Mam'k Schools

(May 1, 2008) On April 17, SEPTA, the Special Education
Parent Teacher Association for Mamaroneck-Larchmont, awarded a total of
more than $4000 in grants to teachers and staff at five district schools.
The grants are for programs specifically aimed at enhancing the learning
and educational experiences of children with special needs.
At the April 17 awards ceremony, the SEPTA leadership extended
appreciation to the grantees for their high level of dedication, creativity
and innovation. Among those receiving grant funding were the following:
Central School:
Stephanie Saia , Susan Herron and Charna Cwiebel are reading
teachers receiving three grants to support reading “visualizing
and verbalizing” and an alternative reading assessment program to
improve understanding of literacy development in lower and upper elementary
grades.
Chatsworth Avenue School:
Noreen Yeh (Grade 3) and Rachel Morse (Special Ed) are
receiving a grant to support acquisition of the “Touch Math”
program. Touch Math is the leading multisensory teaching approach that
bridges manipulation and memorization. It will compliment the TERC math
program used in the district.
Mamaroneck Avenue School:
Ana Vidal-Montes and Mary Diffley (ESL) are grant recipients
to support literacy workshops for parents of bilingual kindergarten students.
Angela Fazzolari and Susanna Franco (Speech) are being
provided a grant to obtain and develop adaptive materials for the special
needs population.
Jaime Perrotta (Special Ed) received a grant for the “New
Heights” reading program to enhance struggling readers’ fluency
and phrasing (Resource Room)
Joanna Levande, Ellen Katz, Lynn Dearwester, Susan Longo,
and Kathy Rie (Pre-K ) are awarded a grant for materials in support of
the continuation of their project "Creating and enhancing materials
to encourage literacy in Pre-K“.
Murray Avenue School:
Patrice Schwartz, Rebekah Ward, Christine Portanova, Bernadette
Mannion, George Hebron and Linda Finn (Kindergarten) are receiving a grant
to obtain supplies to support development of fine motor skills and sensory
integration.
Hommocks Middle School:
Jesse Dancy-Smith (Grade 7 Social Studies) received a grant
to enhance audio visual equipment used in the “History Alive!”
program for unconventional learners.
Shalini Sudarsanan and Susan Chester- (Grade 6 Social Studies
and Mathematics) received a grant to purchase Battleship games for their
project “Linking Battleship to the Global Grid and Coordinate Plane”
