Local FBLA Takes Gold at State Competition

by Toni Lloyd-Davies

(April 17, 2008) This year is a special one for the Mamaroneck High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). The MHS group earned the highest honor, coming in first out of 160 participating chapters for New York State in the “Chapter of the Year” event. The chapters follow a state syllabus and are rated on their scrapbooks, which detail and document the 29 activities they participate in over the year.

Advisor Eileen Multari and Grace Novikoff accepted MHS's first-place trophy for Chapter of the Year.

The Mamaroneck chapter members had many other triumphs at this year’s State Leadership Conference (SLC), held April 7-9 in Ellenville, NY. In competitions at the individual, team, and chapter level, MHS brought home an additional 16 awards. Ten of the awards were for first or second place, qualifying the recipients to attend the National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, June 26-29. Furthermore, two MHS members were elected to the New York State officer team.

FBLA is an organization with over 200,000 members internationally with chapters all over the United States, the Virgin Islands, Bahamas, DODDS Europe (children of military families living abroad) and Canada. Established in 1942, FBLA remains the premier business-related leadership organization for students. The State Leadership Conference is the climax of the year at the state level.

Mamaroneck FBLA members display the awards earned at the NY State Conference.

From Mamaroneck, Elias Everett and Giancarlo Riso were elected to serve on the state officer team for the 2008 – 2009 school year. Elias, a junior, previously served as state historian and will now serve as state president. Giancarlo, a sophomore, will begin his first year on the state officer team in the position of vice president in charge of District 3S, consisting of Westchester and Rockland counties.

“There’s nothing more rewarding than working hard on something, and giving it your all and then being called up on stage to get publicly acknowledged,” said Elias, “There’s nothing like it.”
