Green Week 2008 Expands on Green ThemeMultiple Activities Planned for Every Day: April 12-18by Judy Silberstein (March 27, 2008) Green Week 2008 in Larchmont and Mamaroneck is taking the green week theme to a new level, said Elisabeth Radow, the Mamaroneck Town resident who spearheaded the first such event last year. The celebration, scheduled for April 12 through April 18, incorporates the spirit of both Earth Day and Arbor Day and encourages the entire community to spend the week participating in a host of diverse environmentally-oriented activities. Green Week 2007 was focused on replanting trees lost in the storms of 2006-2007. (See: Tri-Municipal Green Week to Spur Tree Planting.) Trees are still a big part of this year’s event. (See information below on how to donate or plant a tree.) This year’s goal, however, goes farther to include the Village of Larchmont, the Town of Mamaroneck, the Village of Mamaroneck, the Sheldrake Environmental Center, the Larchmont-Mamaroneck League of Women Voters, students in K-12 at the Larchmont-Mamaroneck schools, community seniors and the libraries to offer a host of environmentally related, hands-on, courses and activities. For example, the Sheldrake Environmental Center will offer a course in organic gardening; the Village of Larchmont is installing a rain garden; and the Village of Mamaroneck Environmental Committee is teaming up with Mamaroneck High School Apple students to present a recycling program. In addition, local merchants will be highlighting environmentally related products or otherwise showing thier support for the environment. There will be green offerings at local restaurants, wine stores, book stores, nurseries, and many other retail establishments. One of the highlights of the week is the airing of Thomas Friedman’s documentary “Addicted to Oil,” sponsored by the League of Women Voters. The movie will be shown free of charge on Tuesday, April 14th at 7:00 pm in the Mamaroneck High School tiered classroom. Some of the week's events are both educational and cultural (an art show at the Sheldrake opens on April 13). Some are for kids (Touch-a-Truck in Mamaroneck Village is on April 13). Others are for pets (at Paws on Palmer on April 17). These and other events are being organized by Ms. Radow, Jan Feinman, Marie Venezia, Mary Davis and Sarah Evans with help from many others. Ms. Feinman, head of Larchmont’s Parks and Trees Committee said she is particularly excited about a tree pruning mini-course occurring in Larchmont’s Turtle Park on Monday, April 14. Lou Sebesta, urban forester for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, will be teaching basics and supervising a hands-on practice session from 10 am to noon. Participants are encouraged to bring pruning tools. Another hands-on event is planned for Wednesday, April 16. Anyone interested in helping create a rain garden is invited to show up (with tools) in Kane Park (the strip of green along the Boston Post Road from Beach Avenue to Kane) between 10 am and 1 pm. Catherine Wachs, of Right Brain Design, will discuss the benefits of rain gardens, which use both plantings and land contouring to control storm water. Every day has at least one and often many activities going on in Larchmont and Mamaroneck. Check the Gazette Community Calendar for details – and keep coming back because new events are still being added.
