Senior (Citizens) Prom Rocks the MHS Gym

reporting by Maria Gallagher, photos by FAL photography

(March 6, 2008) You've heard of the senior prom? On Wednesday, March 5, the 120 seniors dancing in the Mamaroneck High School's Post Road gym were members of senior citizen centers in Larchmont and Mamaroneck. Dancing along with them were approximately 60 teens, the hosts for the evening. The students were from the MHS Student Council and the board of the Coast, a group formed to plan school dances, who planned the event with help from the school's student coordinator, Carol Scheffler, and the Larchmont Senior Center coordinator, Maria Gallagher.

According to Ms. Scheffler, "The kids raised a bit of money and decided to spend it on a dance for somebody else - the seniors."

There was a DJ, dinner (catered by Carolyn's Cove), raffle prizes (donated by parents and area merchants) and entertainment from an a capella singing group (The Sound) and a rhythmic dance troupe, The Steppers. There was a king and queen of the prom (picked from a hat) And of course there was all sorts of dancing.

For one senior citizen, this was the dance she didn't get to go to the first time around. "I missed my senior prom because we were at war at the time and the men were over seas," she told Ms. Gallagher.
