Larchmont Library Triple Play: Food, Careers & Body Image

by Joanna Rein

(March 6, 2008) The Friends of the Larchmont Library are adding to their slate of diverse offerings this spring with three programs designed to appeal particularly (but not exclusively) to women. The programs focus on food, careers and body image.

Cooking for Moms on the Go: Lauren Groveman

At 9:30 am on Thursday, March 13, Lauren Groveman will offer culinary inspiration and ideas for busy families in a program entitled Moms on the Go. Her presentation will feature ways to keep families cooking, baking and eating wholesome meals together.

LaurenMs. Groveman, a Larchmont mom herself, understands how unanswered questions or mealtime dilemmas keep would-be cooks out of the kitchen. Timing a meal, juggling family schedules or appealing to picky eaters are further obstacles. Ms. Groveman offers simple and savory solutions to these and other cooking challenges.

Lauren Groveman is an internationally-known cooking and baking instructor and busy mother of 3 children. She's the author of several books, including The 'I Love to Cook' Book: Rediscovering the Joy of Cooking for Family and Friends, and Lauren Groveman’s Kitchen: Nurturing Food for Family and Friends. She has appeared in an array of television shows include “Welcome to Lauren Groveman’s Kitchen”, which was taped in her Larchmont kitchen and aired throughout Westchester County.

Ms. Groveman also answers questions and offers recipes through her Larchmont Gazette column, Lauren's Kitchen.

Women Opting Out: Pamela Stone

On Wednesday, April 30 at 9:30 am Pamela Stone will present her 2007 book Opting Out? Why Women Really Quit Careers and Head Home.

Pamela StoneMs. Stone, a Larchmont resident, will discuss her in-depth study of working mothers who left their careers in high-level professional jobs to become full-time, at-home mothers. As high-flying professionals, these women enjoyed advantages and a level of support unavailable to most working women both at home and on the job. Moreover, their track records attested to past ambition and significant work commitment. Why, then, were they leaving their careers behind?

The book explores why and how women came to make this important decision, the factors influencing it and its implications for the women themselves, their families, their communities as well as for women’s status.

Pamela Stone is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Hunter College and The Graduate Center, CUNY. Professor Stone was previously director of her department’s Master’s Program in Social Research and department chair from 1987-1998. A recipient of a CUNY Scholar Incentive Award, she was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University, during 1998-2000 and on leave there for the 2000-2001 academic year.

Body Image: Michelle Stacey

The final program in the series is Body Image and Anorexia in American Culture presented by Michelle Stacey on Thursday, May 8 at 7:30 pm. Ms. Stacey is a freelance writer and editor-at-large for Cosmopolitan Magazine. She's the author of Consumed: Why Americans Love, Hate and Fear Food and The Fasting Girl: A True Victorian Medical Mystery.

All programs will take place in the Larchmont Village Center behind the Larchmont Public Library. They are free and open to the public.
