St. Augustine 7th Grade Girls Capture West-Put CYO Crown
by Dominic Schmitt
(February 24, 2008) St. Augustine’s 7th Grade girls’
basketball team captured the Westchester-Putnam CYO divisional crown on
Sunday, February 24, beating Sacred Heart of Dobbs Ferry in the league
championship game 36-29.
St. Augustine’s trailed at the end of the first quarter 11-5. With
a tight 2-3 zone defense, St. Augustine then kept Sacred Heart to only
two points in the second and third quarters. Then the Larchmont team took
the lead in the second period, keeping ahead of Sacred Heart all the way
to the end.
Forced turnovers by forwards Erin Federspiel, Zoe Schmitt, and Patricia
Galan and by guard Hannah Fitzgerald were then converted on the offensive
end. Center Hannie Everett blocked two shots in the second half, and the
St. Augustine defense forced Sacred Heart to put up shots from outside
the arc. St. Augustine led the game at both ends of the court in rebounds.
Ashley Laymon led St. Augustine’s with 16 points. Maggie Sullivan
sank key free throws and, with Ashley, was able to penetrate a tough full
court press by Sacred Heart.
The victory at Iona Prep on Sunday was particularly sweet this year,
given St. Augustine’s loss last year in the second round of the
post-season championship. It is the first championship crown for the St.
Augustine program in several years. The team ended the season with a 12-1
record.
