WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU’RE REJECTED?
Dear Career Doctor:
I just went through four interviews for the perfect job. I really like the company
and I really could have been good there. But I just heard they hired someone else.
I am angry, sad, frustrated. Is there anything I can do about this? They
made a mistake!
Yes. Write your main contact and say how much you like the company and how much you wanted the job. Say that if the person they chose doesn’t work out, let you know. Also mention that you will call in a month or two just to see how things are going. Then do just that. After that, don’t call more than once every six months to inquire again. But you could send an occasional email or note to let your contact know if you get a promotion or change jobs.
Companies are always looking for good, non-defensive, enthusiastic employees. This will show that you meet those criteria.
I know several people who’ve been successful using this approach. And when I was getting my doctorate in psychology, one of my favorite classmates had applied three times before she got in. No one else had ever dared to apply a third time after getting turned down twice. The admissions committee was so impressed by her determination that they let her in. And that was a great decision. I hope you get what you want too
