MHS Soccer Coach, Players Earn Top Honors
by Tony Caroll
(November 20, 2007) Mamaroneck Girls Varsity Soccer Coach Ron Blain was named 2007 Coach of the Year, and junior forward Stephanie Velez earned Player of the Year, in a vote by the soccer coaches in League I-A. Stephanie Velez was also an All-Section and All-League selection, as were her teammates Phoebe Hanley, Emma Mintzer, Erika Romagnoli and Amanda Tuck. Anna Carroll and Emily Wilson were voted All-League.
The team’s strong showing in individual honors was a reflection of a successful season for the players and the coach. At the team’s end-of-season dinner on November 15, senior Dayna Geldwert capped a string of grateful comments to the coach from the departing seniors. “You made us want to work hard,” she said.
The hard work paid off: the team won the league championship with an 8-0 record (See: MHS Girls Soccer Grabs League Title.) They then advanced to the semifinals of sectional play. (MHS Girls Soccer Wins 2 Playoff Games, Bows Out in Semis. MHS Girls Soccer Wins 2 Playoff Games, Bows Out in Semis.)
Tony Carroll's daughter is on the team. He is the secretary of the Westchester Youth Soccer League Board.
