Wittner Chronicles 60 Years of Mam'k Conservation History

by Harriet Kline

(November 1, 2007) Did you know that the Town of Mamaroneck has been concerned about the environment and about resource conservation since 1948?

Mamaroneck Town Councilwoman Phyllis Wittner has long been involved in environmental issues and has documented these activities in a book titled A History of Conservation of the Town of Mamaroneck 1948-2006. The production of this publication was partially funded by the Premium River-Pine Brook Preservation Association.

The book offers a comprehensive look at the many community groups that have taken on specific projects to promote and to preserve various environmental areas such as the Hommocks Salt March, the Premium Salt March, Gardens Lake (aka Duck Pond), the Sheldrake River area and others. The book also itemizes the various education efforts undertaken by the L.I.F.E. Center (Local Involvement for Environment) now known as the Sheldrake Environmental Center which began as an outgrowth of a study project undertaken by the Larchmont Junior League.

Ms. Wittner also cites the many community volunteer organizations that contributed and continue to contribute to accomplishing specific environmental goals and how inter-municipal cooperation is key to the conservation of our shared resources.

Numerous appendices add some details to our knowledge of our three (Town of Mamaroneck, Village of Larchmont and Village of Mamaroneck) communities – namely the memberships of the many environmental groups in the area; indexes to articles published in the Daily Times; schools’ involvement in various “Beautification Day’ activities; membership of the TOM boards since 1934, and many other facts and figures.

A History of Conservation of the Town of Mamaroneck 1946-2006 aims to provide an in-depth resource for current and future community residents. It can also serve as a model for grass roots community conservation efforts.

The book is available at the Town Center in the office of the Town clerk or the environmental coordinator. .
