(October 22, 2007) Mamaroneck High School's varsity girls soccer team defeated New Rochelle today, 7-0, winning the League A title in Conference 1. The Tigers were a perfect 8-0 in League play, including victories over perennial rivals Scarsdale and White Plains, and 13-3-1 overall. They were undefeated in their last 11 games.

Earlier in the season, members of the MHS Varsity Soccer team showed the determination they used to win the league title.

The team is led by standout striker Stephanie Velez, a junior, and senior co-captains Emma Mintzer, Emily Wilson and Anna Carroll. It features a high-energy group of senior, junior and sophomore players, including a number of newcomers.

First-year coach Ron Blain has been adept at keeping all of his players in the mix. “The team is becoming more cohesive, and everyone has stepped it up in the second half of the season,” commented the coach.

The Tigers are heading into Sectional play, with their first game against R. C. Ketchum on Saturday, October 28 at 2 pm in Mamaroneck.

The team is expecting to encounter some of the traditionally powerful teams from northern Westchester and Dutchess counties in the sectionals. While the Tigers’ record against such teams was mixed early in the season, players and coach have continued to gel and are looking forward to the challenge.

“The team is excited,” said Coach Blain. “We aren’t satisfied just to make the playoffs – our goal is to win. We realize that there are some powerhouses in our section, and we have to be mentally and physically prepared to match up with these teams.”

Tony Carroll's daughter is on the team. He is the secretary of the Westchester Youth Soccer League Board.
