Where is the MHS Class of 2007?
97% of 2007 MHS Graduates Will Attend College

(September 6, 2007) When it comes to college applications and admissions, the numbers keep going up, according to Nick Kourabas, the newly-appointed coordinator of the Mamaroneck High School guidance department.
The class of 2007, with 353 graduates, received acceptances from 320
colleges. Students will be be attending 155 institutions (see
below), with 86% of the class attending 4-year schools and 11% at
2-year programs. The total number of 97% represents a rise of 3% over
last year’s college-bound students (Where

Another increase, according to Mr. Kourabas, was among those applying for early action or admission. He estimated the number to be somewhere between 40% and 45%. While a few schools, most notably Harvard, will no longer accept early applications starting this year, Mr. Kourabas does not feel the trend will change. “The drumbeat is still you’ve got to apply early,” he said.
“It just seems like college admission is getting harder and harder,” said Mr. Kourabas. Why? “It’s a function of several factors. We’re still in the 'echo boom' spike,” he noted, referring to the children of the “baby boomers.” “More kids than ever before are applying to college. And among them they’re applying to more schools,” he said and cited 8 to 10 as the norm.
“Twenty years ago when I first started [at Mamaroneck High School] there was a larger percentage of kids who decided they were just not going to apply to college. Now everyone applies – which is just great,” he said, “and we’re not alone in that.” The result is increasing competition to get into colleges.
Nevertheless, the class of 2007 did very well in the college acceptance sweepstakes. “They were an academically very powerful class, one of the best,” he said, but added, “It also speaks to what we do here – the quality of education these kids receive.”
