Mayor Hospitalized for Cardiac Tests; VOL Prepares for Storm
by Judy Silberstein
(April 14, 2007) Mayor Liz Feld was taken from Larchmont Village Hall to the hospital by ambulance early Thursday morning, April 13 following a lengthy Village Board meeting that began at around 7:30 pm Wednesday evening and did not end until after midnight. As of late Friday afternoon, Mayor Feld remained in hospital undergoing cardiac testing.
The board had been considering – and seemed about to approve - a controversial plan to appoint a paid fire chief rather than continue the longstanding tradition of appointing a volunteer nominated by the Fire Council. After a protracted and often emotional public hearing, the mayor announced a postponement of the vote until Thursday, April 19. (See: VOL Opts for 11th Hour Postponement on Hiring Paid Chief.)
According to Deputy Mayor Marlene Kolbert, the mayor had been experiencing cardiac spasms for two to three weeks. Given a family history of heart problems, a decision was made that the condition needed to be checked out.
To respect the mayor’s health and the family’s privacy, a request has been made that there be no calls or visits.
Storm Preparations Underway
Deputy Mayor Kolbert has been involved in all of the storm planning that is underway to prepare for the heavy precipitation and winds predicted to hit Westchester this weekend. She has met with Larchmont’s police, fire and public works departments as well as the Town of Mamaroneck, Westchester County’s Office of Emergency Management and Con Edison.
“People in Larchmont homes in flood prone areas should take special precautions and listen to weather channels and check the websites (www.townofmamaroneck.org) for updates,” advised the deputy mayor.
As of late Friday, the National Weather Service had issued a coastal flood watch for the Sound Shore area. At this point, two to four inches of rain are anticipated with winds of 30 to 40 miles and hour and gusts of 50. Tides may rise two to four feet above normal levels.
Should it become necessary for homes to be evacuated, shelter will be available. The area’s evacuation center is at Mamaroneck High School.
