Girl Scouts Dance with Dads

by Pat Allen

(March 8, 2007) For the fourth year in a row, Larchmont and Mamaroneck Girl Scouts and their dads filled the Larchmont Shore Club for an evening of dining and dancing. Over 170 girls from Kindergarten through middle school attended the Larchmont – Mamaroneck Girl Scout Someone Special Dance on Saturday night, March 3 rd. Most girls came with Dad but others brought Grandpa, Mom or another “someone special.”

The girls picked up their place cards, received their complimentary “glo bracelet” and pre-paid corsage and then many headed off to have their photo taken with their “someone special.”

The evening kicked off with a buffet dinner and quickly moved to the dance floor. “With over 300 people, we fill the Shore Club to capacity,” reported Cathy Bennett, Girl Scout Community Director and coordinator for the event. “This is an extremely popular event that sells out every year. The girls really look forward to getting dressed up and having a special night out with dad.”

As always, the raffle table was a popular spot, with some prizes nearly outweighing the prize winners. “We had a lot of generous raffle donors and a great variety of prizes,” commented Lori Barger, Hommocks troop leader. “We had businesses, troops and even individual girls donate prizes this year.”

“According to my own daughter as well as several other girls and dads we heard from, this was the best dance yet,” said Central Troop Leader Mary Gardiner commented.

“We tried to add some new things this year,” said Ms. Bennett. “One of our troop leaders, Lisa Hamm-Greenawalt, put together a wonderful program booklet with ads purchased by families attending the dance. We also collected photos of Girl Scout troops in our community and put them on a DVD which ran all through the evening. It’s nice for the dads, especially, to see pictures of the girls ‘in action’ as they aren’t often with us when we camp, march in parades or do service projects. This dance is just one of many great things the Girl Scouts offer to the girls in our community.”
