MHS Girls Soccer Wins 2 Playoff Games, Bows Out in Semis

(October 31, 2007) The Mamaroneck girls soccer team lost in the semifinal on Wednesday, October 31 to top-seeded John Jay–East Fishkill, ending their Sectional playoff run.

After winning their League title, the fifth-seeded MHS Tigers started strong in Sectional play against defending champion Roy C. Ketchum on Sunday, October 28, winning 2-0 on goals by Stephanie Velez and Anna Carroll.  (See: MHS Girls Soccer Grabs League Title.)

The defense – Lynn Greenberg, Emma Mintzer, Amanda Tuck and Emily Wilson – continued their dominant play and held Ketchum to six shots, mostly from long-range, that were handled confidently by goalkeeper Phoebe Hanley.

The defense was even more critical in a tense contest at fourth-seeded Arlington on Monday.  Although both sides had good scoring chances, each goalkeeper came up with outstanding saves and the game remained scoreless through four overtime sessions.  In the penalty kick “shoot-out,” Phoebe Hanley got her hands on several Ketchum shots and stopped the fourth. The five Mamaroneck shooters, Stephanie Velez, Jade Mandel, Sami Walden, Lynn Greenberg and Alanna Flynn, were perfect. Mamaroneck prevailed in a hard-fought game.

There was to be no similar drama at East Fishkill. 

The Patriots, currently ranked fifth in New York State, efficiently bottled up the Tigers’ attack and eventually wore them down for two second-half goals, ending the Tigers’ season. 

Coach Ron Blain commented, “I asked our players to put all their heart and soul out on the field, and they did.  They walked off that field as champions.  They had tremendous success this season, they worked hard for it, and they deserve it.”

Tony Carroll's daughter is on the team. He is the secretary of the Westchester Youth Soccer League Board.
