BERNICE MONSON
Bernice Northcott Monson, a 34 year resident of Larchmont,
died at home on November 28, at age 89. Born in Richmond, Virginia, and
raised in the south, Bernice had a lengthy career which included working
for the Civil Aeronautics Board for five years in Washington, DC, before
moving to New York City in 1945 to work for Pan American Airways.
Bernice retired as a senior financial analyst from Pan Am in 1972 after
27 years, and then on December 30, 1972, she married long time Larchmont
resident and widower Roland Parkinson Monson. After his death in 1983,
Bernice went back to work locally for another 18 years, retiring again just
before her 84th birthday.
A world-wide traveler, skilled seamstress and quilt maker, Bernice also
enjoyed being active in her church and community.
She is survived by five stepdaughters, all graduates of Mamaroneck High
School, Sally (and husband Robert) Hoffmann of Bethesda, MD (MHS class
of '48), Eleanor Davenport of Tallahassee, FL ('52), O. Kristin Monson of
Middlefield, MA ('59), Karen (and husband Joseph) Torgesen of Tallahassee,
FL ('62), Susan (and husband Berwyn) Griffiths of London, England ('65);
16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2006, at 11 am at
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 111 North Ave., New
Rochelle. Interment will be on December 16 at 11:30 am at the Logan City
Cemetery in Logan, Utah. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be
made to your local Humane Society or to the World Humanitarian Fund of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
