HELENE MEDCALF BRUNINGS
Helene Medcalf Brunings, a longtime resident of Scarsdale and lately of
Larchmont, passed away October 16, 2006 after a prolonged illness.
Helene was born January 17, 1915 to Myra Peck and John Curtis Medcalf of
Baltimore, Maryland. After graduating Forest Park High School, she
received her B.S. from Johns Hopkins University. She practiced as a
Medical Technologist in Bluefield, West Virginia.
In 1940, she married her high school sweetheart, Karl Brunings and
moved to New York, where she raised her family. As an award winning
horticulturist and flower arranger, she became the President of the
Malba Garden Club, where she began her lifelong dedication to nature
conservancy. She championed the involvement of children in all pursuits
of the Club. She coupled her love of nature with a fascination with
birds and their habitat.
A dedicated philanthropist, Helene pursued her varied interests with
energy, expertise and enthusiasm. She chaired many committees at the
Scarsdale Woman's Club before becoming it's President in the mid seventies.
Her passion for sailing and travel took her to many ports and fabulous
locations throughout the world.
She is survived by a brother, Robert Medcalf of Biglerville, PA; her
daughters, Frieda Gardner of Minneapolis and Laura Brunings Hoffman of
Larchmont; three grandchildren, Kate Gardner Goetz, Edwin Charles
Hoffman, III and Elizabeth Brunings Hoffman and her great granddaughter,
Rivka.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2006, at 3:00 PM,
at St. John's Episcopal Church, Larchmont, NY.
