TOVE DITHMER OSTERBERG
Tove D. Osterberg, a longtime Larchmont resident, died suddenly on Sunday,
October 1, 2006 in Bennington, VT. Mrs. Osterberg was born on August 9,
1932 in Jakarta, Indonesia to Sven E. and Elsa (Just) Dithmer. Tove
spent the first nine years of her life in Japan, where her father was a
General Motors executive.
Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, the family returned to
Scarsdale. Mrs. Osterberg attended Scarsdale schools and graduated from
Abbott Academy (now part of Phillips Andover Academy) in 1950. After two
years at Connecticut College, Mrs. Osterberg earned a bachelor's degree
from Columbia University.
On May 27, 1957, Tove wed William G. Osterberg of NYC in Copenhagen,
Denmark. After living in Greenwich Village and Brooklyn Heights, the
Osterbergs moved to Larchmont Woods. After her children were raised,
Mrs. Osterberg resumed a career in publishing, and her last position was
Promotions Manager of Smithsonian Magazine.
Tove was an avid lifelong skier and sailor, and she was an accomplished
painter and poet.
Mrs. Osterberg is survived by her loving husband, William, of Mamaroneck,
her loving children, Nils of White Plains, Tove and her husband, David J.
Becker of Hartsdale, Kristin and her husband, John McElroy of Larchmont.
She was the loving grandmother of Nicholas, James and Elsa McElroy, and
the loving sister of Erik Dithmer and his wife Beryl. She is also survived
by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Service will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, Ocober 13 at St. John's
Lutheran Church in Mamaroneck, Reverend Dr. Marvin E. Henk officiating.
