JANE PARKER MARKS
Jane Parker Marks, of Camden, Maine, passed away Sunday, August 20, 2006
at the Quarry Hill Nursing Center in Camden with her daughters at her
side.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on September 22, 1917, she was the daughter of Joseph Cromwell
Parker and Ann Gratsch Parker. She married Lionel Peabody Marks on July 12, 1947 in New
York City. Mr. and Mrs. Marks lived in Larchmont, New York, for many years and were active
members of St. John's Episcopal Church where she served on the Altar Guild and was the
first female member of the vestry. She was President of the Larchmont Garden Club and a
member of the Larchmont Yacht Club.
The Marks summered in Camden and Rockport for many years on their sailboat, Tamarack,
before purchasing their home in Camden. Mrs. Marks belonged to the Camden Yacht Club and
the Megunticook Golf Club and was active in St. Thomas' Church. She was a member of the
Flower Guild as well as a lay reader at the church.
Mrs. Marks was an extremely talented flower arranger and gardener. She created lovely
gardens in Larchmont and in Camden. She served for many years as an accredited Master Judge
at flower shows on the East Coast. She also belonged to the Garden Club in Camden.
Mrs. Marks loved to entertain and was known for her hospitality, warm personality and
stylish hats. She enjoyed welcoming newcomers and introducing them to the community.
Mrs. Marks traveled extensively throughout her life, journeying as far as China, Thailand,
and South Africa as well as many points in between. She shared her love of travel with
her daughters and their families, taking them on cruises to the Caribbean and the
Mediterranean.
Mrs. Marks was predeceased by her husband, Lionel Peabody Marks, who died on January 23,
1984. She is survived by her three daughters, Jennifer Peabody Marks, and her husband,
Arthur J. Norton, of Alexandria, Va., Joan Peabody Southwell, and her husband, Thomas of
Sierra Madre, CA., and Josephine Peabody Campbell, and her husband, Douglas of South Salem,
NY; and five grandchildren, Alison Peabody Southwell, Douglas Hutchison Campbell,
Sebastian Marks-Norton, Emily Parrish Southwell, and Andrew Campbell.
A memorial service was held Thursday, August 24, at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, Camden.
