HELEN REEDER CROSS BROADHEAD

Helen Reeder Cross Broadhead of Mamaroneck, NY died on Friday, September 15, at the age of 93. She was born August 26, 1913 in Wilmington, NC, daughter of Helen Newbold and Arthur Morris Cross. She had two sisters, Sarah Frances Vail (deaceased) of Richmond, Virginia and Enola Newbold Cross Tobi of Tampa, Florida. She attended a one room schoolhouse in Ducktown, TN, a small mining town where her father was an executive of the copper mine. When she went to college she joined every club available - thus earning the distinction of being voted the “outstanding Freshman at Univ. of TN“ in a class of 10,000. She went on to graduate from Duke University where in 1936 she married Edward Hall Broadhead. Later she received her Master's in English Literature in 1964 at Trinity College in Hartford, CT.

Above all else, Mrs. Broadhead was a most dignified lady who was accomplished in teaching and writing. As a writer she had published four children's books, and over 150 articles in magazines such as the Ladies Home Journal, Gourmet, Jack and Jill, and Children's Activities. As a lifelong English teacher she taught at the University of Hartford, St. Margaret's School for Girls in Waterbury, CT, Fairleigh Dickinson University in NJ, and The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY.

After her retirement Mrs. Broadhead also taught at Westchester Community College and ESL at Mamaroneck Continuing Education. She volunteered as a reader at Sarah Neuman Health Care before living there the last six years of her life.

One of her greatest joys was traveling in England and visiting the haunts of some of her favorite authors, Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Jane Austen. She was a true Anglophile. Always a leader, Helen was a past president of the Literature Club in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, and the Thursday Morning Club in Meriden, CT. She was active in the Larchmont Avenue Church, serving as a Deacon, an Elder, and member of the Music and Membership Committees.

Mrs. Broadhead's greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her loving daughter, Cynthia Joseph (Mrs. Philip) of Larchmont, NY, her son, Dr. David Broadhead of St. Thomas, USVI; her five adoring grandchildren, Amy Haltom (Mrs. John) of Roseville, California, David Broadhead Jr., of San Antonio, Texas, Karen Selman (Mrs. Cengiz) of New Rochelle, NY, Deborah Roller (Mrs. Eric) of Tucson, AZ, and Jennifer Cross Joseph of San Diego, CA., and nine beloved great grandchildren.
