JOHN STEWART BARNEY
John Stewart Barney, of Mamaroneck, NY, died on September 1, 2006 at the
age of 92. Known to all as Stew, he will be missed by family and friends.
He was born on September 14, 1913 in Brattleboro, Vermont, to Helen
Weatherhead, and Clarence Cutting Barney.
Stew graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1931, was President of his
class, and attended Worcester Academy in 1932. He received a BA from
Colgate University in 1936 and a MBA from Harvard Graduate School of
Business Administration in 1938. Following graduate school in summer of
1938 he was employed by Picker X-Ray Corp. where he subsequently became
Treasurer and Comptroller.
In September 1941 he was drafted into the army as a private eventually
attaining the rank of Captain AUS. He attended officers' candidate school
at Fort Francis E. Warren in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was assigned to a
Quarter Master service company and sent back to England to train for the
D-Day Invasion, scheduled to go in D+4 hours, but actually landing in
D+4 days. He served with a QM service company in the early part of the
war, assisting with Graves Registration Company and was appointed
Adjutant of a QM service battalion. He returned to the US in July of
1945, and was preparing to serve in the invasion of Japan with his
QM service battalion but was discharged from Fort Lee, VA. He returned to
work at Picker X-Ray. War time correspondence with a home town girl led
him back to Brattleboro after the war and there he married Betsey Wolcott
Barber on June 22, 1946. They moved to Mamaroneck, New York where they
have made their home ever since.
Picker relocated to Cleveland in 1969 and Stew decided to retire rather
than uproot his family. He found employment at the Rye Neck School District
as treasurer and stores clerk and began a whole new phase of his life.
At Rye Neck Stew was in the unique position of ordering supplies for the
staff as well as signing their checks. He retired from that post in 1980.
In addition to working and raising a family Stew was very involved in the
community. He served on the Rye Neck Board of Education for two terms
and was active in the Boy Scouts of America as District Commissioner. He
was father to four Eagle Scouts, and grandfather to one.
Stew was a long-time member of the Mamaroneck United Methodist Church
where he served on the Board of Trustees as long as church law would allow.
During that tenure he held the position of Treasurer. Stew loved music and
sang in the in the church choir for 45 years. Later in life he would sing
out the hymns by heart. As a Representative of the Picker Corporation he
was active in Rotary Club and was also an active member in the University
Club.
He is survived by his wife, Betsey and four sons and their spouses; John
and LaVerne of Mamaroneck, William and Pamela of Casselberry, FL, David
and Kathy of Mamaroneck and Robert and Larry of Littleton, MA, and six
grandchildren: William, Melissa, Jessica, James, Katie and David.
