KATHLEEN GATENS HARRINGTON
Kathleen Gatens Harrington 64, of Little Compton, Rhode Island, passed away at her home on Wednesday August 23, 2006. The daughter of Mary Virginia Ullman Gatens and Edmund James Gatens, Kathleen was born in Iowa City, Iowa on October 5th, 1941. She attended Saint Patrick's Grade School and was a member of the first graduating class of Regina High School in 1959. Kathleen received a Bachelor of Science Degree from St. Mary's Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana in June of 1963. She was married on June 15th of the same year at St. Patrick's Church to James Joseph Harrington of Brooklyn, New York.
Accomplished pianist and former organist for St. Patrick Parish, Kathleen was a member of the National Honor Society, Vice-President of her senior class at Regina and an active member of the Iowa City 4-H Club. Among her many accomplishments, Kathleen taught for NYC School System on Staten Island, NY and served as Chairman for the Parks & Trees Committee in Larchmont, New York where she was a resident for over 20 years. A member of the Handicraft Guild of the Rhode Island Chapter, Kathleen was an accomplished weaver, inspired by the work of her mother Mary Virginia.
She is survived by her five children: Patrick Harrington of Los Angeles, California, Kathleen Harrington of Middletown, Rhode Island, Daniel Harrington of Newport, Rhode Island, Moira Ruhly of Culver, Indiana and James J. Harrington of Newport, Rhode Island. Kathleen was a devoted Grandmother to Caitlin, Moira, Grace, James L., Shea, and Sean and beloved Sister of Maureen Gatens. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Daniel Michael Gatens.
A Mass will be celebrated in her honor at 10:00 Am., on Saturday, September 2, 2006 at St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church in Little Compton, Rhode Island. A Memorial Mass celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City will be announced at a future date. Memorial donations will be accepted by the Regina High School Foundation and the Iowa City Weaving Guild.
Her impeccable character and nobility of spirit earned her the plaudits of those fortunate enough to cross her path. May her memory serve as a Blessing to all who knew her.
