PAUL COVINGTON MORAN, Jr.

Moran Long-time Larchmont resident, Paul Covington Moran, Jr, passed away on Saturday, June 24, at the age of 84 after a long battle with cancer.

He was born in Washington, DC, on January 14, 1922 to parents Paul and Molly Moran and enjoyed a childhood full of trips to Eaglesmere, PA, and Pawleys Island, SC.

Paul received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 1943 from Union College in Schenectady, NY, where he was an active member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. In 1944, he served as a J.G. Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Brazil, first in Bahia then in Rio de Janeiro. Affectionately known as “Mike” to his South American friends, Paul enjoyed his new surroundings, learned to cook several native Brazilian dishes, and adopted a parrot who he named Charlie.

After the war, Paul married, settled down in Mt. Vernon, and traveled the Northeast as a hosiery salesman. After the birth of his daughter, Marilyn, in 1954, Paul moved to Larchmont and joined Orienta Beach Club which would become his "home away from home" for the next 50 years. It was at Orienta that Paul met his second wife, Barbara, to whom he was married for 40 years, raising sons, Lee and Paul. And it was also here that he served on the Board as Vice President and was chairman of many committees including Membership, Admissions, Entertainment, and Grounds.

Paul filled retirement with gardening, cooking, swimming, dining out with his many friends, vacationing in the Caribbean, and singing to The Mills Brothers, especially Up a Lazy River!

He leaves behind his wife Barbara, daughter Marilyn, sons Lee and Paul, daughter-in-law Yoshie, grandson Christopher, and a legacy of joy and enthusiasm. Known as Bud, Uncle Sox, Big Paul, and Pablo, he will be greatly missed by his many devoted friends who called and came to see him right up until the end. The world is a better place for having had Paul Moran in it. He was a great husband, father, granddad, and friend.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Paul's life at a memorial service to be held at Larchmont Avenue Church on Friday, June 30, at 11:00am followed by a luncheon at Orienta.
