Prior to moving to Atlanta, he lived for 17 years in Mamaroneck and was active in politics for all his time there. His interest in politics started in high school and continued through the rest of his life. After college, he worked on the staff of NYS Senator Joseph Pisani and began his involvement in Mamaroneck and Westchester politics in 1974, by contributing to the campaign of his dear friend and colleague Angelo Mustich. He was an active member of the Republican party and maintained continuous contact with friends and colleagues in the village. He was an avid collector of political memorabilia and books and maintained a political library in his home.

When Gary moved to Atlanta he sold his ideas about classified advertising to The Atlanta Journal Constitution and his advertising business quickly grew. He became known for his political prowess and community awareness by meeting with executives of social groups and editorializing in local magazines and weeklies. He also continued his community involvement and interest in the political life of Atlanta. He served on the board of a local cable TV station in Atlanta and in Fort Lauderdale, he served on the Broward County Human Rights commission. He was keenly aware of making a contribution to his community. His career in advertising spanned his life, beginning with ML Grant Advertising in New York, and co-founding Richards and Bastian Advertising in Harrison before striking out on his own to start ADvice ADvertising, Inc. in 1990. In 1992, he moved his company to Atlanta, where it continued to expand and then expanded it further to Fort Lauderdale, FL, where he maintained a second home.
