FRANCES GALLAGHER MADEY
Frances Gallagher Madey of Wellsley, Massachusetts, longtime Larchmont
resident, died early in the morning of March 27 after a long illness.
Mrs. Madey was born to Nora and John P. Gallagher on April 26, 1916 in Irvington, NY.
Fran Madey attended Irvington schools, and graduated in 1937 from Cortland State Normal
School (Cortland College). In 1940, she married John James Madey, who was principal of
Chatsworth Avenue School in Larchmont from 1950 to 1973. He died in 1977.
Fran Madey taught physical education in Mount Morris, New York, for several years before taking time to raise her family in Larchmont. Her children, Marcy, Steve, and Brian, all attended Mamaroneck schools. She was a substitute physical education teacher in the Mamaroneck School System and returned to teaching fulltime in 1960 at Mamaroneck Junior High School.
She and her late husband were founding members of Sts. John and Paul Church in Larchmont.
Very active in Girl Scouts in the 1950s and 60s, Fran did volunteer physical therapy work for 30 years in the Geriatric Outpatient Pavilion at Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle, New York, before retiring in 1997. Fran’s love for music and the piano gave her the greatest joy over the years and sustained her through her recent illness.
She is survived by daughter, Marcia Ericson and son-in-law Carl Ericson of Wellesley; son John Stephen Madey and daugher-in-law Lauren O’Neill of New Rochelle, NY, and son J. Brian Madey and daughter-in-law Colleen Madey of Essex, MA; her grandchildren: Christian Ericson, Tyler Ericson, Corinne Madey and Sean Madey. Also surviving are her three sisters: Virginia Bristol (and her husband Dr. Leonard J. Bristol), Patricia Lynch; Eleanor Anderson and her husband Fred Anderson; and many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Her brother-in-law James Lynch predeceased her.
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care Fran received from the loving staff at Newton-Wellesley Alzheimer Center during her last five years.
A wake will be held at J.S. Waterman and Sons (and Waring) Funeral Home, Wellesley,
MA Thursday, March 30 from 5 to 8 pm. A funeral mass will be held Friday, March 31 at
