CAN I GO BACK TO MY OLD EMPLOYER?
Dear Career Doctor:
I left my company of 9 years to go to a competitor that is much larger. My previous
company was a small "Ma and Pa" type company, and I was tired of the internal squabbling and
financial issues that go on with a small company. I previously played a large role in a
small company. The new company is large and I'm a very small fish, and I've been here for
3 days and am feeling so bad about my decision. I'm pretty sure my old company would take
me back but I'm not sure what to do. Any advice for me?
Charles
Dear Charles:
Many people are scared and unhappy the first week or two on a new job because everyone and
everything seems so strange and unfamiliar. But my advice is to stick it out for several
weeks. You left for good reasons. You probably joined your new company for good reasons.
But if you are still unhappy after giving it a reasonable time, cut your losses and go
back to your old employer.
I hear that it is more common these days for employers to hire people back, even if they
have been gone for several years. That makes sense. The company gets a person who
knows the corporate culture, so they don't have to train them to do things "our way."
The company also gets someone who knows their way around and is happy to be there. But
just make sure you have given yourself enough time to make a sound business decision.
