Stuck at Home in Larchmont? How to Get Essentials Deliveredby Judy Silberstein (originally published June 12, 2005; updated December 14, 2006) What happens if you’re laid up with the flu or a broken leg, no one is home to make a run to the store and you really, really need some medicine, a box of Kleenex or some chicken soup? Manhattanites would simply reach for their phones – but out here in the suburbs, can you get a delivery of essentials? The answer is: it’s getting harder, but it's still possible to get old-fashioned home-delivery in Larchmont from a pharmacy, grocery and restaurant. Here’s what to do. DrugsIndependent pharmacies are getting scarce, and many of the large chains don’t deliver. Those of us who have lived in Larchmont for over twenty years remember finding a pharmacy on every block. Now we’re down to two independents, both of which continue to deliver prescription medicines along with any other items they carry. Almarc Drugs (834-5000) at 2127 Palmer Avenue (in the small shopping center at the western edge of Larchmont) takes orders between 8:30 am and 6:30 pm. The first delivery of the day starts around 10:30 am; the last delivery goes out at around 5 pm and should be at your home by 7 pm. “If you have the prescription in hand, we’ll pick it up from your house,” said John Maracich, the supervising manager for Almarc. Otherwise, they’ll take the information by phone or fax from your doctor. There is a $1.50 charge for deliveries, but no minimum purchase required. Buck’s Pharmacy (834-1019) at 108 Chatsworth Avenue has free delivery, unless your only purchase is a prescription on an insurance plan, in which case there is a fee. According to Howard Friedman, pharmacist and owner, you can get anything in the store delivered. Delivery service starts at 10:30 am, and the last run is at 4:00 pm. Duane Reade (834-8593) at 1275 Boston Post Road, part of a pharmacy chain, also has free delivery of prescriptions and items from the "front of the store." Call by 2:00 pm to have items dropped off later in the day. FoodLarchmont has its share of takeout restaurants, mostly offering Asian fare, but what about grocery items? Stop and Shop offers Peapod, its online ordering system, where you acquire an online account, place an order and wait for a deliver. However, the soonest your items will arrive is the next day. That's true for Fresh Direct as well. What if your needs are more immediate? Food Horizon, the small, independent grocer at 112 Chatsworth Avenue (834-2642) may be your lifeline. The store will bring you anything they stock, including produce, meats, deli, breads, dairy, canned and dry goods. They’ll also deliver from their prepared food buffet – soup to nuts (or better yet, dessert). You’ll need to order at least $25 worth of goods, and get your order in before 11 am. The delivery shows up around 1 pm. The few Asian restaurants (Hunan, 834-0400; New China, 833-2345) have their own delivery service, but you can also get deliveries from almost any eatery in the village if you go through Chatsworth Taxi (833-3333). For a $5 fee – plus the cost of the taxi's time (generally, $4.75 for a local stop) – the driver will pick up your order from the local establishment and drop it off at your home. |
