LWV Hosts Free HBO Film on How Women Got Right To Vote

(November 29, 2006)
It has been only 86 years since women gained the right to vote – a time most women today cannot even imagine. On Thursday, December 14th the League of Women Voters will present a free showing of “Iron Jawed Angels,” an HBO movie that dramatizes the women’s struggle to win the right to vote in the early 1900s.

Starring Hilary Swank and Anjelica Huston (who won a Golden Globe for her performance), the film will be shown at the Emelin Theater in Mamaroneck at 7 pm.
Mamaroneck high school English and film teacher Dr. Michael DiGennaro will introduce the movie.
“Seeing a film such as Iron Jawed Angels is a compelling reminder of the ends to which women went to get the right to vote,” commented League president Christie Derrico. “These women endured miscarriages of justice, were jailed, gave up their personal lives and were physically abused and socially ridiculed, all in an effort to gain the right to vote.
To support the airing of the movie, the LWV will host a cocktail party fundraiser from 6 to 7 pm ($25 for adults). Appetizers and drinks will be served. Local merchants, including Cosmo & Alex, Café Mozart, Post Wine & Spirits and Stop & Shop, are donating their products. For reservations, email lwv10538@aol.com or call 328-0982.
