Larchmont Wins Top AAA Traffic Safety Award

(November 16, 2006) Larchmont has won AAA's top Platinum Award for the outstanding effectiveness of its traffic safety programs, according to AAA New York President Dennis J. Crossley. The community was honored Thursday, November 9 during a luncheon ceremony at the Westchester Country Club in Rye. AAA New York, the local AAA affiliate, presented a total of 97 awards.

Larchmont was one of five Platinum award winners in AAA's annual Community Traffic Safety. Awards Program, which recognizes outstanding organizations, individuals and communities for their efforts to make the region's roadways safer for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. Other Westchester County winners were Tuckahoe and White Plains . New York City and Garden City in Nassau County also received the award.
"We are delighted to recognize the vital and life-saving work that is being done by Larchmont and other award winners," Mr. Crossley said.
Over the past five years, Larchmont has shown a 70% reduction in pedestrian injuries and a 44% reduction in vehicle occupant injuries. Their successful traffic safety programs include their speed enforcement trailers and their targeted school zone patrols.
Larchmont Village also received a Pedestrian Safety Commendation for having 18 years without a pedestrian fatality.
