"Oh, Christmas Tree" is Theme at St. John's 80th BazaarDoors Open at 10 am on November 18by Jill Simpson
(November 6, 2006) St. John’s Episcopal Church on Fountain Square in Larchmont will celebrate its 80th annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, November 18 from 10 am until 3 pm. Special this year is the theme, “Oh, Christmas Tree!” that will be featured in a silent auction of designer-created tabletop trees. The bazaar is known for its White Elephant sale, boutiques with handmade and designer gifts and fashions, visits and photos with Santa, and its silent auction offering everything from sports tickets to a week at a vacation home in Martha’s Vineyard. Shoppers have been known to line up well before the 10:00 am start for the bargains on gently used items ranging from ice hockey skates to toys to collectibles and books for all ages. The boutiques this year will offer a wide range of artisan-made items including haute couture European handbags at wholesale prices; custom stationery and holiday cards; handmade scarves, pillows, and floor cloths; photo gifts and gift baskets; baked goods and chocolate delicacies; holiday decorations and Christmas ornaments; and gifts for teachers, friends and everyone else on your list. Lunch and refreshments will be offered to fortify shoppers. There will also be activities and crafts for children in addition to photos with Santa. The Silent Auction will offer many one-of-a-kind items, including vacation homes in Stratton, Vermont, and on the St. Lawrence River; Yankees, Rangers, and NYC Ballet tickets; a beautifully outfitted American Girl doll; a sailboat cruise on Long Island Sound and a catered gourmet dinner for eight. The decorated faux trees, each a work of art and ready to grace a home for the holidays, are a special addition to this year’s auction. Created by local designers, such as Carol Charny, Decoration Day and St. John’s parishioners, the themes include a Patriotic Christmas, The Nutcracker, Cook’s Kitchen, Toys and Trucks, Angels and Cherubs, Golden Elegance and more. The monies raised through the bazaar are used to support outreach programs of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) to benefit women, children and families in the area. Past beneficiaries include the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force, the Community Counseling Center, the CAP Center, HOPE, and Paul’s House in the Bronx. “The St. John’s Bazaar is a very warm and congenial way to get a big head start on your holiday shopping and know you are doing something good for the community,” said co-chair Janet O’Connell. “We think this will be one of the best bazaars ever,” added co-chair Patti Roberts.
Bazaar co-chairs Janet O’Connell, left, and Patti Robert, right, display some of the tabletop trees and crafts available this year on Saturday, November 18th. Jill Simpson volunteers at St. John's Church. For more information on the bazaar, contact St. John’s Episcopal Church at 834-2981.
