Larchmont Cub Scouts "Pack" Up 300 Food Bags For Needy
by Steve Lehman
(November 2, 2006) Larchmont’s Cub Scout Pack 33 collected over 300 bags of food during the annual “Scouting For Food” event run by the Westchester-Putnam Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Pack 33 joined Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts throughout the Westchester-Putnam area in going door-to-door during the week of October 23rd to collect food for needy kids and families in the area.

Pack 33, one of the biggest Cub Scout packs in the council with 75 active Cub Scouts in the first through fifth grades and 25 active adult leaders, was a major contributor to the event. Scouts braved the driving rain and wind on Saturday, October 28 th, to drop the food off at the local branch of Commerce Bank, sponsor of the event, at 1289 Boston Post Road . Because of concerns about the inclement weather and protecting the food, Doug Mooney, father of a Pack 33 Cub Scout and owner of Cornerstone Construction, donated use of a cube truck to store the food during the day.

Preliminary estimates are that Scouts across the entire Westchester-Putnam area collected more than 25,000 pounds, or more than 12 tons, of food. Of this, Larchmont alone contributed more than 3,500 pounds, or more than one-eighth of the entire estimated collection, a very large part of which came from Pack 33’s efforts.
All the items were donated to Westchester County Food-PATCH. Food-PATCH solicits and administers donations from both the public and private sector, distributing food through local agencies that operate programs to meet the needs of individuals and families. Food-PATCH is the supply and support center for 200+ frontline hunger relief member agencies throughout Westchester.
