120 Future Business Leaders Gather at MHSby Toni Lloyd-Davies (October 25, 2006) How can one be a global leader in the world of tomorrow? On Thursday, October 19, more than 120 students from Westchester & Rockland Counties gathered and confronted the question. The students, members of the Future Business Leaders of America, met for workshops, speakers, and networking. The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is a national organization with roughly 250,000 active members. Its main purpose is to prepare student leaders for the business world. The Fall District Meeting was a chance for members to learn new business skills by attending workshops. All of the many workshops were run by students themselves. “Running a workshop is one of the most rewarding experiences for students. It forces students to research an important topic in business, and gives them an outlet to practice their public speaking skills,” said Eileen Multari, MHS FBLA advisor.
Isabell Morse-Dias, Mamaroneck High School's FBLA President, and Rosie Weisburgh, New York State Reporter, present a workshop on "Confidence in Public Speaking!" For the first time since 2001, the fall meeting was hosted by Mamaroneck High School, home of the New York State Vice President for District 3S, Adam Reid. Seven schools from Westchester and Rockland Counties attended, including three new chapters. “It is the largest turn out of new schools we have had in many years,” said Adam Reid, the main coordinator of the event. “It’s very exciting that our organization is reaching a larger audience.” Student workshops included lessons in public speaking, running a successful campaign, parliamentary procedure, and many more. In addition to the workshops, members heard from keynote speaker Savita Wakhlu, president of the Larchmont Rotary Club, who spoke on how to be a global leader and become more culturally aware. The students also heard from two representatives from the March of Dimes foundation, the FBLA national and state charity, who presented an educational slideshow about their cause. The New York FBLA chapters plan to raise $7,500 by April for the March of Dimes. Toni Lloyd-Davies is a member of the MHS FBLA. |
