FLEXIBLE LEGAL JOB? WORKING
FROM HOME
Dear Career Doctor:
I am recovering from a two year illness and need to get back into
the job market. I am somewhat disabled so am unable to drive. I
practiced law 20 years ago, before having kids. Now I need to work
for financial reasons. Because I still have school aged children
at home
and am disabled, I need to find employment with flexibility.
Any
ideas for somebody in my position?
B.
Dear B:
Working from home, using your computer and law skills should be
possible. For example, all large law firms have what are called "library"
lawyers who do a lot of research and writing, but do not have face-to-face
contact with clients or even other lawyers. And many law firms
outsource some of their work.
So, make a list of all the law firms that would appeal to you,
given your area of expertise or personal style. Check and see if
the firms
have web sites that give information that is helpful to you. Contacting
the firms by phone might be better than emailto get initial information
about how they hire. If you were at the partner level, try to reach
the managing partner of the firm. If you are more associate level,
then
call Human Resources -- and ask if they use a hiring recruiter.
It sounds like you have had a very hard time, and I wish you the
best of luck finding work you enjoy from home.
