MEDICAL SCHOOL INTERVIEWS
Dear Career Doctor:
What are the acceptable answers when the interviewers ask the question, "Why do you want to be a
doctor?" -- other than better earning and job security?
Nirmal K.
Dear Nirmal:
I am tempted not to answer this question, because, quite frankly, if you don't know the answer to this
question, you shouldn't be a physician.
The only good reason for subjecting yourself to medical school is that you love helping patients as
much as you love the study of science. If you can't say this honestly, look for other jobs that
provide good pay and job security. There are plenty of them -- ones that don't require the grueling
hours, emotional stress and exposure to blood, guts and disease. Patients deserve to be treated by
physicians who genuinely care about their welfare and want to cure illness -- not just earn a good
income.
