SHOULD I GO INTO SALES?
Dear Career Doctor:
I've been in the information technology field for ten years. I've always loved technology and
still do, but lately I wince when I think of doing something technical. I don't find the same
pleasure I did many years ago. I've been considering a new direction - sales - because I enjoy
talking about technology and would love to sell technology. What do you suggest?
Michael G.
Dear Michael:
I certainly agree a change is necessary. Anyone who "winces" when they think of their work has
got to get out of there!
It's a good sign that you enjoy talking about technology, and know a lot about the field. But
the real key to success is being able to "ask for the sale." You can be the nicest and most
knowledgeable person in the world, but if you can't close deals, you will not be a successful
sales person. That requires being pleasantly assertive: neither so pushy that people avoid you,
nor so easy-going that people walk away from your deal and buy from someone else. Read some
books about sales techniques. If you don't "wince" while reading, go for it! Your first selling
assignment will be to sell yourself as a salesman!
