TELL ME ABOUT VETERINARY JOBS.
Dear Career Doctor:
Tell me about veterinary jobs.
Anil88
Dear Anil:
The main job in the field is, of course, a veterinarian. Some vets special in large animals
like cattle and horses, others specialize in treating small animals and pets.
These days becoming a vet is even more difficult than becoming an M.D. Here's why: There are very few
schools of veterinary medicine -- fewer than one per state. Since the states usually subsidize the
training, which is extremely expensive, preference is given to in-state applicants.
There are other related positions in the field which require less expensive training, but also tend to
be less lucrative: veterinary assistant, animal breeder, groomer, trainer or boarder.
