HOW DO I CHOOSE BETWEEN CONFLICTING DREAMS?
Dear Career Doctor:
I am a student at the moment, and I have conflicting dreams for the future. I want to
follow in the path of medicine with botany but somehow include math in all of that.
Is it possible that I will be successful in accomplishing all three of those career options?
Or should I just choose one? Do you know of any field that would include all three?
Ty L.
Dear Ty:
The work that physicians, botanists and mathematicians do is very different. To name just
one difference, physicians work with people, botanists with things and mathematicians with
concepts. Which do you prefer?
People in those fields also tend to work in different settings: hospitals, labs (or out in the field)
and offices. Again, does one sound much better to you than the other?
Do I know a field that combines all three? Some botanists specialize in developing new drugs and
medicines from plants. You would have to know botany, medicine and math to do the research.
