I MADE THE WRONG CAREER CHOICE
Dear Career Doctor:
I have just completed a B.S. in Business Management, however my heart has always told me to
become a doctor. For some reason, I decided instead to do business.
What do you suggest I do? Would I have to do five years more, even with a business degree?
Janet
Dear Janet:
I am afraid you probably have more than five years of study ahead if you want to become a
doctor. First, before you can apply to medical school, you have to complete all the
pre-requisite courses you probably missed when getting a business degree: physics, mathematics,
biology, inorganic and organic chemistry. Then, of course, there are four years of
medical school followed by three to eight years of internship and residency.
It will require enormous effort for you to change fields., but spending your life in a field
you don't like may require even more effort. The question is: How much do you love medicine
and how much do you dislike business?
How to decide? Take a job in business and/or take some of the pre-med courses you missed.
See how you like each. If you dislike business and enjoy the pre-med courses, then I would
advise you to follow your heart.
