2006 Town Budget Approved - Spending Up 3.8%
New Fire Chiefs Elected
by Harriet Kline
(December 21, 2005) The Mamaroneck Town Board voted unanimously on Tuesday, December 21, to adopt a $26,265,540 budget for the year 2006. The board also heard results of elections in the Town Fire Department.
Town Budget
The final Town budget is $45,000 higher than the preliminary figure presented to the board on December 7, which results in a budget that is 3.8% or $966,690 more than last year. (See: Town Budget) The changes, according to Town Administrator Steve Altieri, represent additional contingency monies allotted to the fire and highway departments funds.
The budget will increase the tax rate in the Unincorporated Town of Mamaroneck by 4.5%, which is less than last year’s 6.6% rate rise. Residents of the villages of Larchmont and Mamaroneck will see a decrease in their tax rate of 23% over last year, because they receive a different portfolio of services from the Town.
As they voted to approve the budget, board members expressed a comfort level with the final numbers. Councilman Ernie Odierna called it a “tight” budget. Councilwoman Nancy Seligson said she was comfortable with the modest increase. Supervisor Valerie O’Keeffe cautioned that municipalities with 0% increases do not necessarily offer the full range of services that are available to Town of Mamaroneck residents.
Town Fire Department Elections
Councilwoman Phyllis Wittner, who serves as liaison to the Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department announced the results of departmental elections held on December 8. Matthew Peloso was elected chief. David Commender was elected first deputy chief and Sean McCarthy was elected second deputy chief.
Outgoing Fire Chief Joseph Mirabella was on hand to thank the board for its support in the past year.
UPCOMING: The next meetings of the Town Board will take place on Wednesday, January 4 and Wednesday, January 18. The latter meeting will include a public hearing to discuss proposed “no parking” restrictions on Burton Road and Cooper Lane
