Senior Center President Inducted Into Hall of Fame
-- Planning New Activities for Current & Prospective Members
(December 20, 2005) The Larchmont/Mamaroneck Senior Center is celebrating both significant milestones and a number of new initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for its current members and to attract new participants.
Recently, the center’s long-term president, Betty Mach, was inducted into the Westchester County Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. On Valentines Day in 2006, another long-term member, Helen Herz, will be turning 100. Meanwhile, the center, located behind the Larchmont Public Library at 119 Larchmont Avenue, is being spruced up with a new coat of paint, new lights and new tables that should be in place in time for the February 14 celebration. Also being planned are new activities, including an exercise class and a computer class. A mahjong group is in the works; the first lesson will include learning how to spell this classic Chinese game that has once again become popular in Larchmont, joked Anna Danoy, head of the Town of Mamaroneck’s Community Services that oversees the center.
Ms. Mach, who will also be celebrating a significant birthday in February – her 85th - outlined some of the upcoming initiatives and said that she “really appreciated” being nominated by Ms. Danoy for the Hall of Fame. A member of the center since 1980, Ms. Mach took up the vice-presidency in 1995 and the presidency six years later. Ms. Danoy noted, “For more than twenty years, Betty Mach has been a driving force in the Larchmont senior community.” One indication of that "driving force," perhaps, was that Ms. Mach made it through a major snow storm on December 9 to arrive at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Tarrytown.
“I mostly try to keep peace at the Senior Center," said Ms. Mach. "We have a nice group and every day it’s something different – painting, bridge, bingo, films and lunches.” The Senior Bus provides transportation daily to and from the center, and on Wednesday mornings and afternoons there are trips to the Stop and Shop. Several times a year there are special meals and parties that bring together seniors who meet in Larchmont with those who gather at the Town Center.
Membership is open to local residents (who pay $20 per year in dues) but “you can come to the center a number of times without joining to see what we have to offer,” said Ms. Danoy. “With the support of the local elected officials, we’re hoping to add even more activities in the new year,” she added.
