LMC-TV’s “Sunny” Award Goes to Gazette Founders

by Louise Lynch, LMC-TV Board Member

Publishers' Note: Thanks to all from LMC, Larchmont, Mamaroneck and beyond who helped make us feel so warmly appreciated. -- Judy and Paula

(December 8, 2005) The Larchmont Gazette’s creators, Paula Eisenberg and Judy Silberstein, made some news of their own on Sunday, December 4, when they received LMC-TV’s annual “Sunny” Award. A large group gathered on a snowy evening at Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club to honor the pair for their vision and ingenuity in bringing an electronic "newspaper" to Larchmont and Mamaroneck.

At the Sunny Awards (l-r): First LMC Board President Sunny Goldberg presents the engraved glass award to Gazette Publisher Judy Silberstein Michael Charles, current LMC President; Gazette Publisher Paula Eisenberg receives her award from former Larchmont Mayor Miriam Curnin. LMC-TV, Larchmont-Mamaroneck’s community television station, annually bestows the Sunny Award for an outstanding contribution to the community, and “community” was very much the operative word of the event. Various speakers praised Ms. Eisenberg and Ms. Silberstein’s dedication and topnotch journalism, but the recurring theme was the community-strengthening impact of the Gazette. In the words of Michael Charles, President of LMC-TV, the electronic newspaper “has transformed how we are connected and brought us closer together.”

Both recipients also stressed the community angle.  “When Judy and I started the Gazette, we knew there was a need for very local news coverage, and we thought online was the way to go. It's a wonderful thing how the community has embraced our vision and taken it farther than we could have hoped,” said Ms. Eisenberg as she received her award. Ms. Silberstein concurred and voiced thanks from both awardees for Gazette editors Ned Benton, Joan Simon, Harriet Kline and Rosita Fichtel for their “24/7 moral support,” “keen editorial eyes” “remarkable dedication” and for helping the community “keep in touch.”

Former Larchmont Mayor Miriam Curnin presented the award to Paula Eisenberg, and Sunny Goldberg, first Board President of LMC-TV, presented the award to Judy Silberstein. In addition, Michael Charles gave the Gazette creators Congressional Proclamations from Congresswoman Nita Lowey, and Village of Mamaroneck Trustee Tom Murphy along with Village Manager Lenny Verrastro (both standing in for Mayor Phil Trifiletti), proclaimed December 4, 2005 Judy Silberstein and Paula Eisenberg Day. Also offering congratulations was Westchester County Legislator Judy Myers, Larchmont Trustee Liz Feld (representing herself and Larchmont Mayor Ken Bialo), Town of Mamaroneck Supervisor Valerie O’Keeffe, and NY State Assemblyman George Latimer.

The Sunny Award presentation is the annual fundraiser for LMC-TV, and this year’s event continued in the station’s tradition of combining homage and amusement. After watching an entertaining and moving video tribute to the Gazette creators, the attendees formed two teams and participated in a game-show-style local trivia quiz. The evening's unanswered tie-breaking question was "How many fire hydrants are in the Village of Larchmont?" If you think you know, email your answer to the Gazette: publisher@larchmontgazette.com
