Books, Art, Food for Kids & Parents at Palmer Art: Oct 30
Local Talents Behind Latest Children's Offerings
by Joan R. Simon
(October 27, 2005) Bugs, dogs and silly monkey banana pudding will be featured at Palmer Art Gallery (next to the Larchmont Playhouse) on Sunday, October 30 from 11 to 4, as Larchmont author Susie Fasbinder and her husband, artist George Fasbinder, launch their new book series: I Got a Bug, I Want a Dog and I Want to Cook. Local cooking instructor Julie Gale, who contributed the recipes for I Want to Cook, will be on hand to dish out samples of silly monkey banana pudding from the book. “It’s a children and parents’ show,” Ms. Fassbinder said, and everyone is welcome.
Mr. Fasbinder’s art work, which his wife describes as “whimsical,” will be on display, along with greeting cards based on his paintings. In addition to the three books, there will be T-shirts decorated with book illustrations and red and white polka dot aprons for sale.

The team of 3 Heads are Better Than One (George Fasbinder, Suzy Fasbinder and Bill Jones) is producing a new series of children's books, one on cooking brought in local cook/writer Julie Gale.
The new book series, featuring “Katie, the little girl who wants it all,” is the product of Three Heads are Better than One, a group organized by the Fasbinders and Bill Jones, who is technical director for the project. More books are planned, including “I Want to Sew,” “I Want to Travel” and “I Want a Friend.” “We are three people who had independent careers, who combined their talents. We feel that our names are on something we’re proud of,” Ms. Fasbinder explained.
The books are targeted for children ages 3 – 7, although Ms. Gale noted that the recipes in I Want to Cook are geared for a slightly older audience, with adult supervision recommended. “They are tailored for the taste of young children and also their attention level. They use very simple steps and not too many steps in the process.” The 12 recipes include snacks, main dishes and desserts. Where did Ms. Gale come up with her ideas? “I had taught a couple of classes that were geared toward children and I had cooked with four of my own. I used that as a guideline as to what would work with young kids.”
Ms. Gale will be combining her culinary and literary skills in the coming weeks with a cooking demonstration at the Newcomers’ Club on November 20 where the books will be on sale. She will also be autographing I Want to Cook at the Mamaroneck Avenue School Book Fair on November 1 to 4.
