MHS Karnival & Rocktoberfest to Raise Funds for Katrina Victims: Oct 28
by Joan R. Simon
(October 20, 2005) Games, food, music, and contests will be featured at a special Karnival for Katrina sponsored by the student government at Mamaroneck High School on Friday, October 28, from 4 pm until dusk on the baseball field inside the track oval (or in the Post Road gym in case of rain). Admission is $3, with all proceeds (collected and calculated by the Future Business Leaders of America) going to Habitat for Humanity, which is working with Gulf Coast hurricane victims.

Student Council members create posters for the Karnival. |
Approximately 30 clubs, sports teams and performance groups at the high school are joining in the fun. The Frisbee and Tennis Clubs are hosting a cake walk, Mahiscan (the yearbook) will have a photo booth, the Globe (newspaper) will sponsor a spelling bee, Salsa (the dance club) will provide salsa lessons, the Multicultural Club is offering hair braiding, and SafeRides will run an obstacle course using special goggles that simulate inebriation. There will even be a Jumbo Bounce that can hold 10 people at a time. Count on lots to eat – grilled items and ethnic food, provided by the various language and multicultural clubs: think Chinese, French, Italian, Latin American … And lots of music, including the pep band, Sound, The Force, and other high school groups.
David Cohen, a junior who is secretary of the executive board of the Student Council, encouraged everyone to come: “It’s a really big community event, not just for the high school.” Raffle tickets, at $1 a piece, earn chances to redeem innovative prizes, such as a singing telegram delivered in school by the a cappella group, Sound; a walk-on part in the senior musical (for a non-senior); a free page in the Mahiscan; a tank of gas; and a cookiegram delivered by the Cook to Care club.
Rocktoberfest, featuring five local performers and 5 high school bands, will follow the Karnival at 7:00 pm in McLain Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for students (including college) and $10 for adults. Proceeds will be donated along with the Karnival profits to Gulf Coast hurricane victims through Habitat for Humanity.
