Early Flu Clinic in Larchmont, Oct 27: Registration Required

(October 19, 2005) Flu shots will be available in Larchmont at the Senior Center (behind the Larchmont Library) on Thursday, October 27, between 1 and 3 pm, but pre-registration is required.
“We’ve been allocated 150 doses by the Westchester County Department of Health – that’s what we typically get each year,” said Anna Danoy, Community Services director for the Town of Mamaroneck. There will also be pneumonia vaccinations – which are also regularly available each year at the county’s flu clinics.
So it would appear that, unlike last year, supplies are rolling out in an orderly and predictable fashion. However, there's no predicting demand - which last year outstripped supply. (See 2004: Larchmont Flu Clinic Resumes.)
“If you show up and are not registered you may not receive a shot – registration is important,” said Ms. Danoy. Pre-registration is easy: just call: 381-7840 between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, from Monday to Friday and ask to be added to the list.
Anyone can register to receive the shots, and the federal Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends vaccination for anyone wanting to avoid the flu. (See: CDC Flu Facts.) However, at this point, because of what the CDC is calling “uncertainties” in production and distribution of vaccine, they recommend priority be given to the following groups:
- Adults 65 and older.
- Residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities.
- Adults and children ages 2-64 with chronic medical conditions, especially asthma, other lung diseases, heart disease, and chronic metabolic disease (kidney, blood, diabetes).
- Immunosuppressed individuals over the age of 2.
- Children aged 6-23 months.
- Pregnant women.
- Health care workers who provide direct patient care.
- Out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of children less than 6 months old.
The flu shot is for the typical contagious respiratory ailments that are particularly common during the “flu season” that starts as early as October and goes as late as May.
There is no charge for the shots for those with Medicare Part B; otherwise it’s $25 for the flu shot and $20 for the pneumonia. Payment by cash or check will be accepted at the flu clinic.
Also at the Senior Center: SENIOR BAZAAR
Saturday, October 21 and Sunday, October 22 from 10 am to 3 pm
Also at the Senior Center is the annual seniors’ bazaar, which this year will feature artwork donated by members of the center’s painting class and an unusually large collection of half-price gift certificates. ”I’m particularly grateful for the generosity of the merchants in Larchmont and Mamaroneck this year,” said Ms. Danoy, whose department oversees the running of the center.
Each certificate will be sold at half of its face value and all the proceeds of the bazaar will got to funding activities for the seniors throughout the year. There are over 200 certificates – so plenty of bargains will be available for sale.
