Mamaroneck Schools Welcomes Incoming SuperintendentNew Assistant Superintendent for Business Operations Appointedby Joan R. Simon
(May 12, 2005) “I am very excited with this position,” the
newly appointed Superintendent for the Mamaroneck public schools announced
at the May 10 school board meeting. “The work I’ve done with
the Ossining schools has perhaps enabled me to be a very good fit with
Mamaroneck.” Parents,
administrators and school board members turned out for a reception
prior to the meeting, perhaps to The board voted to accept Dr. Fried's appointment and also to hire Dr. Christine Grucci as the new Assistant Superintendent for Business Operations. The two new appointments represent a major change for the Mamaroneck School District with the replacement of the top two administrators, each with many years of service. Superintendent Sherry King has led the district for 9 years and Assistant Superintendent Sarah Tate has held her post for 15. (See: Two Top Leaders of Mamaroneck School District Retiring) Dr. Fried will begin his tenure as Mamaroneck Superintendent of Schools on July 1 (For more on Dr. Fried, see: New Mamaroneck School Superintendent Selected). He graciously addressed the school board and community after his appointment was confirmed. “In terms of relating to the community as a parent, I’m there,” he said, noting that he is the father of four children, two in elementary school and two in college and graduate school education. He added, “High achievement, looking at the social and all of the other potential skills we want our children to have, are near and dear to me. My commitment to the schools … is to treat the children as if they are my own.” Dr. Grucci to Begin on August 15
When asked about her new position, she replied enthusiastically: “Mamaroneck is an opportunity of a lifetime to work in a nationally recognized district. I’m looking forward to jumping in and not having any downtime.” Her enthusiasm didn’t flag when the subject of commuting from Long Island was raised. She maintained that it takes her about the same amount of time to reach Mamaroneck from her home on the north shore of Long Island as it does to West Hempstead. “I’m looking forward to bringing some of the cost savings measures that I brought to West Hempstead,” she added. Recently she spearheaded an effort to establish a not-for-profit banking consortium involving 15 schools districts and municipalities, which has enabled all of the participants to earn one of the highest interest rates available. Ms. Tate will not leave her position until the end of the summer in order to oversee the myriad construction projects that will be going on over the school break, including the completion of the café and overpass expansion at the high school and new bathrooms at Central School.
